Arabica Microlots from CEPRO Yanesha

After visiting CEPRO Yanesha in central Peru last year and importing Fine Robusta for the first time, we were able to continue our relationship successfully this year. A great opportunity arose to buy great Arabica micro lots from the cooperative for a great price, as an original customer had backed out at short notice. A win-win situation.

We struck and bought Gesha, Maragogipe, Java and Co. With great pleasure. The great thing is that the majority of the lots came from the finca that we had visited on our Robusta trip in 2023.

The Yanesha, an indigenous ethnic group in Peru, live mainly in the Pasco region and the Amazon. Together with the cooperative and a Yanesha linguist, we gave the coffees unique identities to tell part of the story of the Yanesha through their coffees to Europe. The words are not easy to read. The language concept is quite different from our German or Spanish. What we want to learn is to appreciate the diversity of cultures.

Their culture is strongly characterized by myths and rituals, and they speak the Arawak language Yanesha’. Traditionally, they live from farming, hunting and fishing. In recent decades, they have started to grow coffee, which has had a significant impact on their way of life.

Despite challenges such as land loss due to deforestation and illegal mining, the Yanesha are actively working to preserve their culture and language. The cultivation of coffee has opened up economic opportunities for them, but they continue to fight for their rights and the preservation of their traditional way of life.
